Writing Science Fiction and the Use of the Fear Factor
Written by Lance Winslow
Thursday, 06 July 2006

When writing Science Fiction it behooves the writer to look at past historical records of ancient civilization, tales, writings and all the conspiracy theories of the ages. Now then there are many Conspiracy Theories out there, all of which use fear. Some of the “Fear” controls used to control civilizations are well known. There are also many events, which seem real at the time or are actual very real threats.

Science Fiction Plots Using Future Brain Implant Technologies
Written by Lance Winslow
Thursday, 06 July 2006

Currently we have RFID subdermal implants which can be used with GPS to track an individual, pet or allow a patron of a bar or nightclub access without waiting in line. Soon these systems will be used in the Battlespace to keep track of the “blue force” or good guys. There is also a group in Washington DC, which is an electronic privacy group, which decries the advances of such technologies. Thus this appears to be the excellent makings of a really good plot with political intrigue, mind control and police mystery all wrapped up in one. We will certainly see such genres in the near future from the top science fiction writers in the World.

“Jack Meter ain’t no Sam Spade, ya see, but he’s one helluva private dick,” said my gay cat Pico after reading M.D. Benoit’s Meter Made (Mundania Press, ISBN:). Pico, as always, was right. Sam Spade got to bump around in Los Angeles playing with the small fry looking for treasure in clay falcons; Jack Meter gets to chase the big fish all over the known universe, including one or two unknown

Short Story Review: 'A Most Ambitious Experiment' by Mike Krath

Title: A Most Ambitious Experiment

Author: Mike Krath

Published in: East of the Web Short Stories:  http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/MosAmb.shtml

This  is a short, whimsical tale, about a curious scientist who wishes nothing more than to see what will happen to his 401k twenty years into the future. Unfortunately for him, his wife cannot keep her mitts off of it.

This tale follows Robert's wife, as he flits into the past, future, and present making changes, trying to prevent his wife from spending the contents of his 401k, until at the very last, Robert attempts a desperate plan. We won't spoil the ending, but this is heartily reccommended, as this time-travel paradox story is sure to leave you with a twisted, ironic smil on your face at the very end.

 Definately reccomended!

Short Story Review: 'The Perment Implosion' by Dean McLaughlin

Title: The Permanent Implosion

Author: Dean McLaughlin

Published in: Analog – The Best of Science Fiction (ed. Anon, Galahad Books, undated)

One of my favorites of all time, this gem was written for Analog in 1964.

Mick Candido is a rough and hard-working Texan. Earning a living by setting dynamite charges to snuff out oil well fires had a tenancy to do toughen you up. In this character, McLaughlin brings out a character we can all sympathize with – the working man who puts in his 12 hours every day, doing dangerous work, but doing it well.
